Marchhügel

Between Freiburg and the Kaiserstuhl, this little ridge of hills sticks 70 m out of the Upper Rhine Plain with the highest peak just above 250 m (830ft).
This man-made countryside sits atop a small layer of Loess and geologically is considered the older brother of the Kaiserstuhl. Unlike the Kaiserstuhl however, the Marchhügel is not of volcanic origin, but rather a result of the rift between France and Germany in this very region (Upper Rhine Plain).

Generally speaking it’s a piece of rock that wouldn’t subside with the rest of the rift valley (Horst), perfectly suited for gentle, latesummer evening wanderings.

More nature with a side of city feeling?! Berlin! Or straight back to hiking!

Enjoy the pictures!
